A CHARITY that provides homes for older people in Devizes is looking for a new honorary secretary.

The previous secretary, Len Hayward CBE, died in October, aged 91, after looking after the administration of Devizes and District Housing Society for more than quarter of a century.

But his death has left a huge void and society member Alan Truscott, who has temporarily stepped into Mr Hayward’s shoes, is appealing for someone to take over.v Mr Truscott said: “Len was brilliant in the job but I’m sure there is someone out there who can do it just as well. It requires a lot of diplomatic skills and someone who is good with older people.”

The society, which was set up more than 30 years ago by Devizes Rotary Club, owns 33 leasehold properties at The Ark off Long Street and Castle Court off St John’s Street.

It is an industrial and provident society, with all the residents being members, and is managed by a small committee.

The secretary is responsible for the day-to-day running of the society and supporting the management committee which meets four times a year.

Mr Truscott said: “Ideally, a background in housing management would be an advantage but it is not essential.

“This is a voluntary position with a small honorarium in recognition in recognition of the work undertaken.”

The honorarium is in the region of £500 a year.
