Pupils put math to test
YOUNGSTERS from across Swindon visited Lydiard Park Academy on Friday to take part in a big maths contest.
Seven primary schools in Swindon took part in the Inter-Schools Maths Games Competition, which aimed to improve pupils’ number skills.
Youngsters had learned how to play number games during maths lessons and brought them to Lydiard Park to test them out against their peers.
Nicola Cannon, KS3 maths coordinator at Lydiard Park Academy, said: “The engagement and interaction of all students was great to see and it was amazing how simple maths games, requiring only a pen, paper and dice, enthused them.
“It encourages students to develop their maths language skills by getting them to explain how and why their answers are correct, which helps to consolidate their learning and understanding of maths.”
Students at Tregoze Primary School were the quickest mathematicians, winning both the years 1 and 2 category and the Years 3 and 4 category. Pupils at Oliver Tomkins Primary School won the Year 5, 6 and 7 competition.
