A 25-year-old man from Market Lavington was arrested on suspicion of multiple motoring offences after a two-car crash near the turn-off to Stert on Tuesday evening.
Shortly before 7pm, as emergency services were attending the blaze at the recycling centre at the foot of Monument Hill, there was a crash on the A342 involving a BMW and a Honda.
The driver of the Honda ran from the scene and, following a search involving a police dog and the force helicopter, was arrested.
Sgt Vince Logue, of the Wiltshire Rural Crime Team, said: “At this time the man remains in police custody and is being investigated for several motoring offences.”
Witnesses can contact Wiltshire Police on the non-emergency number 101.
