Wiltshire Brownies enjoy centenary party
Girls across the county have begun celebrating 100 years of the Brownies, including those from 1st Minety Brownies.
About 600 seven to 10-year-olds from around north Wiltshire enjoyed a centenary party at The Hilton Hotel in Swindon on Sunday.
Guiding’s archivist for Wiltshire North Gwen Knight has been involved with the movement since the age of seven, when she herself became a Brownie.
She said: “In those days girls were not allowed to run, to jump, to enjoy games outside.
“You had to walk like a little lady.
“To see their big sisters out lighting fires, walking in the woods, working on crafts and doing first aid left them very anxious to join in.”
Members were initially known as Rosebuds, but they were not fond of the name and it was changed the following year.
