Two drivers are in a serious but stable condition in hospital following yesterday's car crash on the A4 at Fyfield, near Marlborough.

It happened at 4.48pm and involved a Ford Focus being driven eastbound by a 74-year-old man from Somerset.

Police say that the Focus crossed the central white lines into the path of a Citroen C4 being driven in the opposite direction by a 48-year-old Wiltshire woman. Also in the car were her 39-year-old cousin and the cousin's eight-month-old son.

The Citroen driver was taken by air ambulance to Frenchay Hospital, near Bristol, while her cousin and the baby were taken to Swindon's Great Western Hospital with minor injuries.

The Focus driver was taken to the GWH and later transferred to Frenchay.

Ian Watters, who works at Fyfield Garage, said: “It was like a battlefield, it was absolute carnage.

“I was serving some customers when I heard a loud bang but as soon as I finished I dashed outside to see what had happened and then rang the police and ambulance straight away.

“They were here within about four minutes and they were still clearing up when I left at 10pm. They said it would be about another hour until they were finished so the road was closed for all that time.

“It was packed in here and everybody was outside helping.

“The Focus hit the other car roughly dead on and the roof had to be cut off to get the driver out.

“One of the ladies had broken her wrist and her ankle and had lacerations to her face. The baby was screaming and crying when it was taken to the ambulance but was fine.”

Police are appealing for any witness to the crash to contact PC Rice at police headquarters in Devizes on 101.
