Budding vocalists are ready to burst into song and help make Calne Town Council’s first Spring Sing a success so that it becomes an annual event.

It is on April 26 from 11am-3.30pm and will include nine different choirs performing at three different venues – Marden House, the town hall and the library.

Visitors will see performances by John Bentley and Cherhill Primary School pupils, as well as the Lingmara world music choir in Chippenham.

Calne Town Council has formed its own choir and will be singing during the lunchtime break.

Town councillor Glenis Ansell is the choir leader and the group will include councillor Howard Marshall, council employees and volunteers from the CCTV team.

Judy Edwards, of the council, said: “It’s really popular – it seems to have captured people’s imagination because it’s a community event. It’s not a competition, it’s about having fun.

“We would love to grow it into an annual event and broaden it. We would like more Calne choirs and choirs from further afield.

“It’s to bring a bit of life into the town at the weekend and to show off some of our facilities like the town hall and the library and Marden House.”

The day will include five workshops, starting at 11am, with an interactive session at Calne Baptist Church aiming to encourage to those who feel afraid to sing.

Sarah Mouille is the musical director for Singchronize, a large contemporary choir that is planning to sing pieces by Elbow, Muse and Pink on the day.

She said: “It’s a brilliant idea. We have done events before where there are lots of different choirs singing and it’s lovely for other choirs to hear each other singing.

“It would be lovely if they could do it every year.”
