The body of a man found in the Kennet and Avon canal in Devizes yesterday has been formally identified.

The man was found by a member of the public in the water close to The Wharf shortly before 6.45am yesterday morning, delaying the start of the annual Devizes to Westminster canoe race.

The dead man has now been formally identified as Mark Stobbart , 44, of Keepers Road, Devizes.

Police are keen to hear from anyone who was in the vicinity of The Lamb pub in Devizes between 1am and 2am yesterday and may have seen Mr Stobbart.

He was wearing a black jacket, black jeans and a tartan check style shirt.

Also, anyone using a boat on the canal on Thursday evening or the early hours of Friday is asked to contact Wiltshire Police if they saw anything suspicious.
