Devizes town councillors have agreed that Roundway residents can have an allotment in Devizes should there be vacant plots.

Devizes residents have always taken priority for allotments at the Quakers Walk and Windsor Drive but the town council’s recreation and properties committee was told that there are vacant plots but no Devizes residents were on the waiting list. However, a resident of Roundway had applied for a plot.

Councillor Albert Wooldridge, chairman of the committee, said people living in Windsor Drive are in Roundway parish but are in near the town council allotments.

He said: “It costs a lot of money to look after a blank allotment when weeds grow.

"Up until now the town council has had a long waiting list but this year a lot of people didn’t renew.”

The committee agreed that when residents of Roundway are at top of the allotment waiting list with Devizes Town Council then they can be given an allotment.

Councillor Wooldridge, who is also a Roundway parish councillor, said he would get the issue put on to Roundway Parish Council’s agenda for its meeting on Monday, April 28, for consideration to be given to allow residents of Devizes to have a plot at Roundway’s allotments in Green Lane.

The town council has formed a working party of five councillors and will invite Roundway and Bishops Cannings parish councils to join them in discussing the boundaries of the Devizes area as part of a governance review being undertaken by Wiltshire Council.
