This year’s Urchfont scarecrow event will have a theme of myths
ORGANISERS of Urchfont’s annual scarecrow trail have revealed the overall theme for this weekend’s event.
They keep it under wraps until the last minute, for fear of spoilers, but have announced the central topic will be Myths and Legends, which could either be classical Greek, Roman, Norse, modern or urban.
Rob Pendry, chairman of the organising committee, said: “Myths and Legends gave us plenty of scope for our creative volunteer scarecrow builders to get busy.”
Urchfont is expecting up to 10,000 visitors eager to enjoy the tableau of more than 50 scarecrows set out around the village from Saturday to Monday. There will also be a barbecue and beer tent.
Mr Pendry said: “The barbecue has been the subject of much careful thought this year. Additional cooking equipment has been bought and improved queue management should help speed things up at peak times. This year, in addition to the excellent locally produced burgers and sausages, we are hoping to widen the choice of foods by offering baked jacket potatoes and fillings for the first time.
“Of course, the tea tent and its range of superb home-made cakes remains a firm favourite with visitors.
“This year we also have a lovely old-fashioned ice cream barrow on Paddock Green, at a point in the trail where people often start to get hungry, thirsty and footsore.”
The scarecrow trail begins at the pond, where visitors can register. There will also a plant sale at Manor Farm House, a flower show in the church, an art and photography exhibition in the village hall and the Sing Alive choir will be by the pond.
