A six-week art course held in Calne for people with dementia ended with an exhibition this week to celebrate their creative talents.

The exhibition, attended by Calne mayor Heather Canfer, was held on Monday at the Lansdowne Strand Hotel to coincide with Dementia Awareness Week.

Twenty people, from Calne and the surrounding area, took part in the course and explored a different theme each week with Chippenham artist Jeff Gibbons.

Pamela Ollis, social events co-ordinator for the Alzheimer’s Society, said there were many beautiful pictures on display, using different paints and pastels.

She said: “It just gave people a chance to relax for a couple of hours a week, to forget about other problems and be in a supportive environment.

“We had a lady who used to do a lot of artwork and she hadn’t done any work for a while so it encouraged her to come back to it.”

The exhibition will be at Calne Library between Tuesday, June 24, and Monday, June 30. For more details call (01249) 443469.
