Calne Tennis Club members are celebrating after seeing building work start on four new floodlit tennis courts at the Beversbrook Sports Facility.

The work, funded by thousands of pounds worth of grants, will be completed by July, in time to catch the end of the summer season.

After four years of fundraising, the tennis club was secured £50,000 from Sports England, £15,000 from Hills Waste Solutions and £50,000 from Viridor.

It will also borrow £30,000 from Calne Town Council until Section 106 money allocated as part of the new Marden Farm development becomes available.

The club rents tennis courts at St Mary’s School and uses the public courts at the Anchor Road Ground, but it is keen to have a permanent base.

Non-members will be able to hire the new courts.

Katherine West, secretary of the tennis club, said: “I can’t wait to test it out.

“Because we’ve been working on it for so long it hasn’t really sunk in. That’s a huge amount of money and I hope now we can build up the club.

“In the past we have really struggled as a club because we’ve not been able to have the facilities.”

Beversbrook facility manager Kevin Whitehorn said: “We only had one tennis court and during the winter months the club had nowhere to train because there were no flood lights.”
