A team of mums and dads took part in Tetbury’s famous Woolsack Race to raise money for Seagry Pre-school.

The team staggered as they carried sacks of wool weighing 60lbs – or 35lbs for women – up a steep hill as part of an age-old tradition dating from the Middle Ages.

Their efforts have raised around £400 for the pre-school, which is a registered charity, and the money will buy toys and equipment for the children aged two to five.

School secretary Fayme Knight joined a relay race with Donna Rockall, Dave Groce and Justin Acheson, while Sharon Howlett and Vanessa Davis competed individually.

The 41-year-old is a personal trainer and has a four-year-old daughter, Freya, who is in her last year at the pre-school.

She said: “The sacks are gigantic and it’s trying to pick them up, that’s what we struggled with really. The weight wasn’t a problem, it was the bulk. My legs were a little bit heavy yesterday.

“I just want to say thank you for all the support from everyone who turned up. We had a lot of people turn up which was really nice.”
