Thanks for Wiltshire Times as grass-bound Trowbridge youngsters can play again

Willtshire Council’s highways contractor Balfour Beatty Living Places has come under fire again for uncut grass.

And the Wiltshire Times was thanked for helping improve the situation.

Mother Lizzy Griffin, who lives next to Stallard Recreation Ground in Linden Place, Trowbridge, took her sons Sam, six, and Max, five, to the park last Friday, but the grass was so long they were unable to ride their bikes.

It is the latest in a series of complaints about the performance of Balfour Beatty over the past month, with residents and councillors complaining about cemeteries, grass verges and parks around the town.

Mrs Griffin said: “We have never seen it like that in the eight years we’ve been here.

"My boys want to ride their bikes, but can’t do it as the grass is too long. Something needs to be done about it.”

Today, after the Balfour Beatty team had visited, she said: "Sam and Max are over the moon to be able to play in the newly cut Stallards field.

"Thanks to the team at the WT for the extra push that was needed to get the job done!"

Trowbridge and Wiltshire councillors Graham Payne and Jeff Osborn say they are still being inundated with complaints about uncut grass.

Cynthia Berryman, who took her great grandson Harley, two, to the recreation ground on Sunday, said: “The grass was so high it almost reached the level of the park wall. It’s disgraceful and it’s not just the park, as there are overgrown grass verges all around Trowbridge.”

The Wiltshire Times has also received complaints this week about uncut grass at Hilperton Cemetery, a green area in Bridge Avenue and Drynham Park Play Area.

A Wiltshire Council spokeman said: “Balfour Beatty has apologised to the council that grass cutting around the Trowbridge area has not been maintained to a sufficiently high standard, and has deployed extra teams urgently to put this right in the face of exceptionally wet weather conditions.”

Yes by not actually employing any local people with knowledge of the area , just sub contract the work out to other companies , Balfour Beatty are a joke.

it would help if they had a knowledge of grass maintenance. They do not have a clue. This weeks local mowing has produced a reasonably short green but with a very long untouched fringe completely around the edge. Who is checking thei work?
This is not a joke. It is probably the worst attempt at grass cutting in history presided over by managers and councillors who know nothing about contracts and care even less

True, it has been wet. That hasn't stopped me cutting my grass once or twice a week for the past 3 months. It's obvious that the contractors are making easy money from the tax payer here. In the conditions we have experienced, grass will need cutting once a week, every other week at least, until the weather dries up, and the growth rate slows. And by cutting, we mean cutting, not hacking bits here and there, with what are obviously blunt blades. Paxcroft being an example, the grass was at least 6 inches, the not so sharp blades get clogged, and don't cut properly. 3 days later, it needs cutting again.

Go to westbury cemetery to see the poir standard of work . Very sloppy standards to say the least. Ive had to fight thtough grass and weeds over my knees in order to get to my little boys grave. They seem to cut the large open areas in the cemetery and the top part for all the new ones but ignore where there is a large amount of graves that they have to go around. Ive never seen it look so unkempt in all the years ive been going there. Its a disgrace to our families who lay there. So much for dignity....

And yes.... who makes sure they do their job properly? They have no pride in theur work, that stands out a mile and certainly dont care... i ended up cutting all the grass n weeds around my lads grave myself. I shouldnt have to . Balfour beatty won a 150 million pound contract to do it. We pay a lot of money for these plots and having them maintained is part of it....

It's because they are so short staffed they are forced to do a quick job on it , and also they sub contract to non local workers who couldn't care less about the finish . Wiltshire Council should interrogate Balfour Beatty about this contract and then admit they messed up and say see you Balfour Beatty.
