We’ll blockade the road, say Warminster residents

People in St Andrews Road, Warminster, are planning a day of action against developer Redrow over its plan to use two cul-de-sacs as access points for a proposed housing development.

Plans for 220 homes on land west of St Andrews Road have been put forward by the developer and a consultation day was held at Warminster Rugby Club on January 23.

Residents’ spokesman Sandra George, who lives near one of the proposed access points, said: “We intend to have a day of action every month starting on June 21 until they consider an alternative route.

“We accept that the houses are going to be built but the proposal to use the cul-de-sacs for access to the site for heavy plant is unacceptable.

“It will be dangerous to the elderly and children and will cause traffic chaos. We have been told that we could expect an extra 160 to 200 cars using this road per hour.

“Masefield Road, Shelly Way, Thornhill Road and Broxburn Road and the whole estate is going to be affected.”

She is urging families on the estate to take their cars out of the drive and park them on the road to block traffic.

She said: “They should not be parked illegally or dangerously but it is time for us to make a point.”

The protesters believe that Victoria Road should be used for the access road instead.

Mrs George has yet to warn police about her protest but Insp Alan Webb, section inspector for Warminster and Westbury, said: “Wiltshire police supports the right to peaceful protest and as such I would like to work with the organisers to ensure that this protest is both peaceful and safe, complying with the relevant legislation.”

Danger doesn't recognize age. It's either dangerous or it isn't. Stop playing the ridiculous "won't somebody please think of the children" card.
