A Melksham gym popular with local police officers could be forced to close if it does not receive planning permission.

The Crossfit Civitas gym was opened on the Evans Business Centre off the A350 near Melksham Police Station in 2012, but has not received formal permission to change its use from industrial to leisure premises.

Co-owner Kieran Bagg has submitted a retrospective change of use application to Wiltshire Council. He said: “We were told by the landlord when we first moved in we could use it as a personal training studio, but then we had a letter from the council saying we would need retrospective planning permission. It has been a fairly straightforward process, and we should hear by August 1.

“We opened about 18 months ago and it has been really good, we’ve had lots of interest. We offer discount for the Wiltshire fire brigade and the police, and we get a lot of those guys in.

“If it’s not done we would have to appeal the decision, or look for new premises.”
