Shails Lane in Trowbridge was reopened last night after firefighters worked for almost 60 hours on the EJ Shanley’s scrap yard blaze.

Crews were called to the fire at 9.39am on Saturday, and maintained a continuous presence at the scene until 7.20pm last night.

During that time crews from across the county worked alongside Shanley’s employees to clear wreckage at the scene of the fire, and extinguish the blaze, which is believed to have started in a waste compactor.

The plume of smoke rising from the fire hung over the town for a day, and was visible across the county, and as far away as Gloucester.

The road at Shails Lane was closed in both directions from Saturday, and finally reopened when the fire crews left.
