WILTSHIRE Police's Major Crime Investigation Team has renewed its appeal for information following the murder of a 60-year-old man in Swindon.

Shortly before midnight on Thursday 26, the man was found dead next to a path between Rodbourne and the town centre.

He was discovered approximately 100 metres from the railway station entrance, just after the underpass. A pedal cycle was also found at the scene.

Detectives, crime scene investigators, search teams, officers and support staff have been working throughout the night on the case.

More than 60 lines of enquiry are being investigated by teams from across the county and Avon & Somerset Police under the Op Brunel agreement. Detailed searches, CCTV and intelligence analysis, and house-to-house enquiries are just some of the investigative work ongoing.

DCI Sean Memory said: "This is a challenging investigation but we have dedicated teams of officers and staff who are conducting meticulous enquiries in the area.

"We know that there were a number of people who were near to the scene on Thursday evening and I am appealing for those people to come forward as they may have vital information to help the investigation. It may be that these people think they have nothing which could help us but it is important that we gather details of everyone who was in the area.

"I am very keen to hear from anyone who knows of someone who sustained any injuries on Thursday night or who had blood on their clothing. We are able to eliminate from the investigation people who are not involved in the offence, so please do not be concerned that you may have wrongly identified someone.

"If you have suspicions about someone please tell us. We can assure callers that information will be taken in the strictest confidence."

Local commander, Superintendent Andrew Carr added: "The seriousness of this case should not be underestimated and we continue to advise people to take on board the general personal safety advice we have issued.

"However, it is important to stress that we are doing everything we can in order to identify the person responsible and enhanced patrols are being carried out across Swindon.

"The pathway between Rodbourne and the Town Centre remains closed and is likely to stay closed into next week.

"Further to the provision last night our dedicated police point will be available this evening in the area of the town centre. Officers will provide advice to any concerned members of the community.

"We appreciate the positive response we have had from the community and urge anyone who has information to come forward."

Anyone with information is asked to contact Wiltshire Police on 101. Alternatively call Crimestoppers 0800 555 111 where details may be left anonymously if preferred.
