Duty called for Melksham Carnival’s Queen of Queens on Saturday, as she put her first aid skills to good use at Party in the Park.

Malina Skuse, who works as a theatre nurse at the Royal United Hospital in Bath, had finished the procession in the afternoon and was enjoying the concert at the King George V Playing Fields when an elderly woman was knocked to the ground by a drunk man.

She said: “I do volunteer work for St John Ambulance, but I wasn’t on duty as I had been involved in the carnival, and was still wearing my tiara.

“Because I am First Aid-trained I was able to get rapid treatment for her, along with my St John Ambulance colleagues.

“It was horrible to see this lady in such great pain, but I managed to keep her warm and comfortable, and thankfully she is now making a good recovery.”

The 23-year-old, who was carnival queen in 2012, was selected to be the town’s first ever Queen of Queens for her dedication to the community, and will hold the title for the next four years.

Miss Skuse added: “The procession was fabulous, really lovely, and we had a great turnout from Melksham.

“The response from the crowd was fantastic; it was just as magical as the first time around, I really enjoyed it.”
