Protesters call for peace in Gaza

This Is Wiltshire: A girl at the protest A girl at the protest

MORE than 2,000 Muslims lined the streets of Broadgreen and Gorse Hill yesterday to show their solidarity with the victims of the conflict in Palestine and to call for peace in the region.

After Friday prayers, the congregations of mosques all across Swindon converged in a silent protest to urge the government to intervene and put an end to the atrocities in Gaza.

Around 2,500 people of all ages and other faiths presented a petition to South Swindon MP Robert Buckland to use his influence in Parliament to intervene in the conflict.

Ishak Mogul, chairman of the Broad Street mosque, organised the event.

“We are not getting politically involved, but people are dying and the situation is grim,” he said. “There needs to be peace.

“The British government needs to intervene. They created Israel in 1947 and they need to go back and finish the job.

“We need to forget religion, this is about humanity and how one person can take the life of another.”

Mohammed Ali, 36, said: “We are here to show our support for the Palestinian community, to show them that we are aware of what is happening to them. What we can do from this country is participate in demonstrations.

“We should be trying to free the Palestinian people and allowing them their basic human rights.”

Mustaque Ahmed, 43, said: “Innocent children are being killed, and we are simply protesting against these atrocities, not in an aggressive way.

“This is a silent protest, and the main aim we have to look at is stopping those who are killing innocent children. We are just showing our support for those who are losing their lives and their families in this conflict.”

The lines of protesters held placards and peace symbols aloft on 2.30pm to join with similar protests that have taken place around the country.

South Swindon MP Robert Buckland said he took their concerns very seriously and would do all he could in Parliament to make their voices heard.

“This shows the huge concern about the ongoing tragedy in Gaza,” he said. “Any conflict where children are being killed is extremely disturbing.

“I believe in a two state solution for Israel and Palestine to have recognised borders.

“This is not a matter that is exclusive to one faith, this is about humanity and finding a solution to the grief and tragedy in the area.”

“This is not an easy problem, it has been ongoing for 70 years. I will be taking these concerns and bringing them to the Foreign Office as I already have done in the past, and I wil continue to do all that I can in my capacity as a representative of this constituency.”

PC Luke Atkinson, community beat manager for Broadgreen, said: “It is a calm and peaceful demonstration.”

What about all the innocent muslims being killed by other muslims? Like in Iraq, Syria etc. or doesn't that count?

Reports on Al Jazeera earlier this week claimed that more than 700 people had been killed in Syria in the past week. Where are the protests about that then?

I would hate to have to live in Gaza. The Palestinians are like ants trapped in a jar with the Zionist military industrial Ogre focusing its technological magnifying glass and chasing them around.

The world watches and does nothing while human beings are being traumatized, maimed and murdered.

You are correct to ask the question, any life lost is a tragedy but in this day an age we are become far too immune to the mass killings. Murders all over the world, some covered by media and others hidden under the political regimes. The little girl’s message “Save Humanity” to our world leaders is for all of these, but can they stand up to the challenge or are they to engross in the commercial gains that have forgotten humanity?

Here we go,the peace loving people living in Gaza are being are being beaten by the big stick of the Israelis. I would do the same as the IDF, if someone kept on hitting me or my family I would not turn the other cheek,I would use as much force as necessary to make sure the person hitting me ended up leaving me or my family alone or dead. The middle eastern culture is about to hit Swindon. Peaceful protest only for now, just look at the images from Paris......... Peaceful protest don't make me laugh.

Its an odd argument and certainly a slant on "foreigners taking over our country" To accommodate Israel they were given land that was and in many cases still is owned by Palestinians........
.So lets say a foreign people were allowed to live in the town center and anyone already there was moved out by force ownership rights removed and told to set up home again somewhere else.
This foreign power then decided they needed more room for their people so took over old town as well and again forced people out.
At what stage are you annoyed? When do you seek legal help? There isnt any.....Appeal to the UN or other groups to assist they dont.
The choice you have is sit tight be quiet and die or fight back with whatever means you have.

Of the two sides who is the invader, what was the reaction of all surrounding countries when Israel was given its state and received recognition form the UN?
They can make all the excuses up they want but Palestine is a shrinking prison and Israel are happy to let the people starve or suffer from poor hygiene. Attempting to gain rights for Palestine seems to be punishable by death.

For those who say the problems of the middle east are coming here I would say as a country Britain helped to cause the problem which all steamed from British Palestine.

Completely agree but this topic is about Gaza.
If Israel hadnt taken so much land and oppressed the Palestinian people this situation would not be where it is today. Where as many of the other places you mentioned are far older grudges.
