TRIBUTES have been paid to former Swindon man David Elkins, who died in a house fire in America before Christmas.

David, 66, who grew up in Moredon, had lived in Naples, Florida, for around 20 years. He died in the fire at his home on December 13.

When he lived in Swindon he ran an electronics business and sports shop called Up and Running, which was based in Gorse Hill.

Despite living abroad he was in regular contact with his sister Rosslyn White and his father Peter.

Rosslyn said: “He was a free spirit and always did what he wanted to do. One of his big passions in life was sport, which he was mad about.”

David played football for Moredon Youth Centre, Swindon Youth and Chippenham Town, and was also a huge Swindon Town fan.

“He was always phoning home and would keep up to date with Swindon Town and talk to his dad about the football,” Rosslyn said.

“Although he had been living over in Florida for a long time he always kept in touch with all his football mates back here too, as that was a big part of his life which he enjoyed so much.”

Away from football, he liked playing squash and hockey, with his love of sport attracting David to move across the pond.

Rosslyn said: “Several of his friends went over there and he decided to give it a go. He loved being able to play golf there regularly and he really enjoyed all the sunshine.”

While living in Florida David married Deborah, although the couple later split up.

Rosslyn said: “They remained friends and would regularly meet up for breakfast and catch up. Since David’s death Deborah has been fantastic, helping us sort out arrangements.”

David’s family learned after his death that he had been planning to return home to live in Swindon.

His family are holding a memorial service for him at St Andrew’s Hall in Moredon Road at 3pm on Friday.

Rosslyn said: “Anyone who knew David and would like to pay their last respects to him are welcome to attend.”

His friends in America will be holding a memorial service for David on Saturday.
