A MAN has been arrested following a burglary at a Pewsey bakery in the early hours of this morning.

Two men were disturbed after police were called about noises coming from Marshalls Bakery on North Street.

A man, 37, was stopped by officers in North Street and arrested on suspicion of burglary. The suspect is currently in custody at Melksham police station.

A police helicopter was used to trace another suspect who had also fled the scene after being disturbed.

CCTV will now be checked following the break in, which took place at around 12.30am this morning and is the third time this bakery has been targeted.

A Wiltshire Police spokesman said: “Officers attended and one man was seen to run from the scene. A man was later located in North Street and arrested.

"National Police Air Service were also tasked to search for further suspects and a vehicle of interest was located in the car park behind the bakery. The vehicle, a Honda Civic, was seized as part of our enquiries.”

Mr Marshall said: “It happened in the early hours of the morning.

“They did quite a lot of damage at the back door. I’m not sure if anything has been taken but there was nothing of any value left on the premises. Our first baker starts work from 1.30am so if it had been an hour later somebody would have been there.

“The burglaries always happen in the early hours of the morning but last time they only took a little cash, only a few pounds.

“We have had CCTV fitted and have recently updated to better cameras. They have caused quite a lot of damage to an internal door trying to gain access to an area which didn’t have anything of any value anyway.”

The baker has opened his doors despite the incident and called upon the community to get in touch if anyone was able to help secure the rear doors to the shop.
