This Is Wiltshire: RUGBY: Pewsey Vale 16 Fairford 12 RUGBY: Pewsey Vale 16 Fairford 12

THE wait is over for Pewsey Vale after they ended their 14-match losing streak in Dorset & Wilts One North on Saturday.

The Pewsey spirit that has shone through all season in defeat was displayed in buckets, particularly in a solid defence that denied a competitive Fairford in the dying minutes.

Playing with the slope in the first half Fairford pressured the home team’s half but it was Pewsey who earned the first points, a foray into Fairford territory earning a penalty that James Haynes converted after 10 minutes.

At the end of the first quarter, a Fairford attack resulted in a try out wide for second row Andrew Stobbs – his first for the club.

Fifteen minutes later Fairford scored a second try under the posts through Chris Tanner, though Vale felt there had been a knock-on, which was converted by Andy Waite.

Pewsey surged forward from the restart and quick ball from the pack via scrum half-Tom Taylor allowed Haynes to dummy switch with centre Gareth George.

That created the gap for centre Phil Vallis to take the pass and go in for the try to leave Pewsey trailing by two points at the interval.

With the advantage of the slope Pewsey piled on the pressure.

After five minutes the reward came with Haynes sprinting in from halfway after fine turnover work by the forwards.

Pewsey pinned Fairford in their own half and stout defending held them up three times over the line.

With five minutes to go an Haynes penalty increased Vale’s lead.

Fairford rallied, but fearless defensive work by Pewsey denied them, despite injuries to flanker Jeremy Horton and lock Jim Waight.
