Highworth Town boss John Fisher is not happy with the commitment that some of his players have shown this season.

A recent run of defeats has led to Fisher conceding that Highworth’s push for the Hellenic Premier title is over.

The Worthians are 16 points behind leaders Ardley and seven behind fourth-placed Ascot United, who beat Highworth last Saturday.

This Saturday they play Reading Town who sit two places behind Highworth and a team they beat 1-0 back in September.

Now a gap has opened up between Highworth and the top four Fisher thinks that Reading will be fighting his side for Highworth’s current position in fifth place. Though it’s a season that Fisher thinks the Worthians could have got more from had his squad shown greater commitment.

“I think some of the side could have made more effort. I’m not going to name names beacuse they know who they are,” Fisher told the Advertiser.

“I do feel a bit let down. They’ve also let the other players down and let club down, if you don’t want to play football then don’t play football. It’s not about going on a stag weekend or whatever.

“I’m annoyed because I feel like if they’ve had the commitment a little more we’d have a chance of winning it (the league).”

“The club makes an effort to pay some of them. Some of them will say that I’ll play Saturday but not Tuesday, of course they’ll say that as they’re not being paid Tuesday.”

One of the source’s of Fisher’s frustration is that despite the inconsistent availability of his squad they’ve performed reasonably well. At fifth in the table and with the quarter-final of the Bluefin Challenge Cup Highworth haven’t had a bad season but Fisher wants more from his team.

“The last five-six weeks we’ve been struggling to get the side out we want. Every week me and Kevin (Moloney, assistant manager), are on the phone trying to get enough players to take along to games.

“To go to two quarter-finals, be fifth in the table and be struggling for players, it’s just not right.”

Fisher is hoping a win on Saturday will cheer him up. For the game he’ll be without Matty Horsell who’s unavailable due to work, Bradley Clarke and Sam Wadieh who are injury doubts.
