ATHLETICS: Watlings hit a golden run

ST MARY’S School’s Yasmin and Ariana Watling both hit the gold trail at last weekend’s Wiltshire Track & Field Championships at Tidworth.

The Watlings, who live in Lacock, were both in top form, with 15-year-old Yasmin tasting victory in the U17 1500m in 5.01.9 whilst 13-year-old Ariana lifted the U15 girls’ 800m title in 2.32.63.

A host of youngsters from Marlborough & District Junior Athletics club made it on to the podium, with Harriet Myles winning the girls’ U13 javelin with a throw of 24.85m, with club-mate Millicent Bailey second (16.26m), while Tom Holmes took the boys’ U13 title (22.74m).

Sprinter Rory Clark picked up two U15 titles, winning both the 100m (12.32) and the 300m (37.53).

Greg Rogan Rea was second in the U15 javelin (20.21) whilst Kieran Short improved his PB by 12cm as he won the boys' U15 high jump, with short also coming third in the U15 long jump (5.15m).

Callum Short (5.21m) and Oliver Marriott (3.82) finished second and third respectively in the U17 event whilst Oliver Rhoads was third in the U13s (4.17m) and second in the high jump (1.35m).

Rhoads also notched up a third-placed finish in the U13 800m, with Ellie Barker also third in the girls’ race.

Devizes School’s Emily Hutchinson went home with the senior women’s discus (28.17m) title whilst Owen Harnett, of Lavington School, was third in both the U17 100m and 200m.

Chippenham Harriers’ Codrula Hurcum won the senior women’s 3000m whilst Simon Nott triumphed in the senior men’s 5000m, with Calne running club team-mate Denise Grech taking the ladies’ title.

  • Hardenhuish School’s Will Partington won the inter boys category at this month’s county pentathlon at Marlborough College.

Partington, who competes for Team Bath and Wiltshire, finished top of the pile after competing in the high jump, shot putt, long jump, hurdles and 800m.

The year ten pupil also plays rugby at Bath academy.
