The Highways Agency is advising road users of an abnormal load being transported along the M4 from Avonmouth near Bristol to Didcot in Oxfordshire between Sunday and Tuesdayr.

The 470 tonne power station transformer will leave Avonmouth Docks at approximately 5am on Sunday and travel to the A46 in South Gloucestershire, arriving at approximately 10am, where the vehicle will be parked overnight.

The next stage of the journey will start from the A46 at 10pm on Monday and arrive at the M4 Membury Services at approximately at 3am.

The final leg of the journey will begin from the M4 Membury Services at 10pm on Tuesday, arriving at Didcot Power Station at approximately 2am.

To minimise disruption to traffic, most of the journey is being undertaken in stages overnight and all roadworks on the affected stretches of the M4 and A34 are being suspended.

The transformer will be escorted by police and will travel at approximately 15 to 20mph, straddling two lanes.

The route undertaken for this journey will be West Town Road, A4, M5, M4, M32, A4174, A420, A46, M4, A34, A4130.

A second similar move will be commencing on 18 November 2007.

Martin McMahon, spokesman for the Highways Agency said: "We are aiming to keep disruption to a minimum while this abnormal load is being transported, but would advise road users to plan their journeys in order to avoid the affected roads overnight during this period if possible."
