Public Hanging at Caen Hill Locks
On Saturday 2 and Sunday 3 February, from 10am to 2.30 pm, British Waterways will be holding a "Public Hanging" at Caen Hill Locks (Lock 41) on the Kennet & Avon Canal, Devizes.
Members of the public are invited to come to Caen Hill and see what takes place during winter stoppage works.
At around 11am and 1.30pm, British Waterways will be craning in new lock gates, the old ones having been removed the previous week.
Each lock gate weighs around 3.2 tonnes which means craning in both gates is the equivalent to lifting two Indian elephants into the lock chamber.
The works at Caen Hill are costing around £300,000 and are part of a £600,000 winter gate replacement programme on the Kennet & Avon Canal which is essential to maintain the canal for our customers.
Essential works which are carried out during the winter period are vital to ensure that the Kennet & Avon Canal continues to attract visitors who enjoy a variety of boating, walking, cycling and angling.
Dale Marshall, construction supervisor for the Kennet & Avon Canal said:
"This is a great opportunity for people to come and see the work we do, meet the staff and enjoy the picturesque surroundings that the Kennet & Avon Canal offers.
Caen Hill Cafe & Information Centre, situated at the top of the Lock Flight will be open during the day for refreshments and souvenirs.
