Hundreds at annual day of dance
HUNDREDS of folk-dancing children attended the annual Children's Day of Dance at Melksham Assembly Hall on Wednesday.
Organised by the Melksham Country Dancers, the event is in its 32nd year and still going strong.
The children, from 16 schools in Melksham and the surrounding area, had the chance to show off traditional folk dances such as Cumberland Square Eights and Lucky Seven's.
"The children enjoyed it absolutely," said Geoff Elwell, chairman of the Melksham Country Dancers. "When we finished the morning session they let out such a cheer I had to cover my ears.
"We've certainly seen better dancing since we started sending out preparations,"
Schools that took part were sent music and direction in advance so they could practise, and were ready to strut their stuff on the day.
More than 200 children took part in the morning session, with another 200 taking part in an afternoon session. The event is so popular that two sessions are necessary to fit everyone in.
The dances were set to live music provided by folk specialists, The Wiltshire Klof Band, with Stuart Vice making the calls.
Melksham Country Dancers meets every Monday from 7.30pm to 9.30pm at Melksham Riverside Club.
All ages and abilities are welcome, for more information contact (01225) 703650.
