Hospital campaign could prove fruitless

CAMPAIGNERS who vowed to save beds at Chippenham hospital could be forced to take a step back.

Doctors, patients and carers formed Chippenham Hospital Action Group earlier in the year and vowed to stop Wiltshire's Primary Care Trust from slashing the number of beds from 43 to ten.

Campaigners saw a brief respite after the PCT agreed to move ten beds from Bath's RUH and place them in Chippenham.

But local GP Dr Nick Brown, speaking at a North Wiltshire District Council meeting yesterday, said the campaign to save the beds might prove fruitless.

He said: "These bed closures are supported right up to ministerial level in central government.

"Without some serious protests at Downing Street I just don't think we will make any headway.

"The PCT has stated its guarantee the beds will not be closed until sufficient replacements are found.

"We need to seek reassurance this is what will happen. I suggest this might be the approach we take to ensure the adequate care for our patients."

Why not close the PCT that would save some money for beds, Fat cat pay packets for created jobs who then waste money on non essential items like art etc
