Pie factory workers leave for the last time
WORKERS at the Bowyers factory in Trowbridge leave the factory for the last time today.
More than 110 workers at the pie-making factory are being made redundant.
It is being closed by Pork Farms because the EU has set a geographical limit on the production of some of its brands.
About 75 workers will stay on until the site closes for good on April 25 and then 30 will be transferred to other factories around the country. The total number of redundancies will be 203.
The company is negotiating with Wiltshire College about selling the site to the educational organisation but no decision is expected for several months.

I was near there last night and thought the site looked forlorn and empty. Now I know why.
Lets hope they put decent security on it so it does not become a traveller camp or vandalised so nearly half of the town centre looks like a derelict building site.
Roll on the development and the vision, though starting to look like myopic councillors to me now - the money to develop has gone - a la credit crunch.
I was near there last night and thought the site looked forlorn and empty. Now I know why.

Curious in the article of 13th July The Wiltshire Times quoted Bowyers management giving the following reasons for closure: "While this proposal is regrettable it is essential to achieve the required cost structure to protect and grow our future business in the UK."
No mention of it being anything to do with the "EU setting a geographical limit" I wonder which is the accurate statement?

I'd like to know if "required cost structure" is related to the building of huge, environmentally damaging highly intensive pig rearing factories in eastern Europe where they've blackmailed / bribed the locals into dealing (well not dealing actually) with the ruinous unpleasant runoff from these huge pig units poisoning the Baltic and the Danube?
If it's true - then I'll not buy their products - don't suppose that'll make 'em cry tho.

God I remember hearing the pigs squealing years ago at this place! I used to work here in the kitchens or BSR as it was called and had enormous fun being horrible to my zitty little sh**ebox of a supervisor, generally throwing sausages around (cos there not worth eatin) and letting M & S know what crap we used for their products!

Sad that an old Trowbridge company has gone. Sad that things have got to the stage where the management know they are being cynical, same the staff, and even the reporter is trying to make things a little less gloomy.
Business these days is for the cynical. Wanna job? OK chum but you'll get naff all from us these days apart from basic pay, poor pension, overrated health plan and minimum redundancy terms.

I think it a discrace that only Dodgy Dave has thouth that the closure of Bowyers is sad, not only do we lose a huge part of Trowbridge's history people like my husband and lots of other families now face the prospect of unemployment.Hope all works out for your husband Ela.
