NEARLY 1,000 young people from Wiltshire and Swindon will be competing in the Wiltshire Youth Games at the University of Bath on Sunday July 9.

They will be taking part in athletics, basketball, kwik cricket, football, hockey and tag rugby. All of the young people will have taken part in trials and coaching sessions organised by sports development officers from around the county to help prepare them for this major event.

Now in its eighth year, the Wiltshire Youth Games is organised by the Wiltshire & Swindon Activity and Sport Partnership (WASP) which aims to raise the level and standards of physical and sporting activity in Wiltshire and Swindon.

The Wiltshire Youth Games is part of the Sport England County Partnership Programmes and across the country young people will be taking part in similar events.

Organiser Louise Cary, said: "The Wiltshire Youth Games is a participation event providing the opportunity for children to represent their local authority and experience the fun of competition. "The games provide the opportunity for young people to take part in a large-scale event, whilst providing a positive sporting experience and encouraging them to continue to play sport."

Tasha Morey, partnership development manager, said: "The opportunity for friendship, team spirit and competition make these events a very important part of the annual sporting calendar. I hope everyone at the Wiltshire Youth Games has a great time
