Historical Note
"East of the 12th Century Church of St John the Baptist, lie the graves of John Lockwood and Alice Kipling, the parents of the author Rudyard Kipling. After a long and distinguished artistic career in India, the Kiplings moved to a residence along Hindon Lane which they renamed 'The Gables'. Their famous son visited them here and, whilst working on his novel 'Kim', his father (his illustrator) used the drawings of one of the pupils from Tisbury Boys' School as the model for the main character."
Property
The Gables we believe was built during the mid-19th Century and has had more recent in-keeping extensions. It is built of Chilmark stone with some mullioned and mainly casement windows under a clay tiled roof. Typical of its architectural heritage the accommodation is spacious and with good ceiling heights.
The main part of the house is accessed from the front door and a spacious hall with stairs to the first floor and doors to both the large light and well-proportioned drawing room and dining room.
On the first floor of this part of the house are three bedrooms, a sewing room and a bathroom. On the other side of the kitchen/breakfast room, is a spacious sitting room with a second staircase leading to a further two bedrooms and a bathroom on the first floor.
EPC rating E.
Outside
The house is approached over a tarmac drive leading to a wide parking and turning area in front of the house and onto a more recently built stone double garage with additional large workshop/store room. To the side of the house with its own separate vehicular access are further outbuildings including buildings suitable for storing garden machinery and tractors, a log store, two greenhouses and garden sheds.
In front of the house are two areas of lawn separated by herbaceous and shrub borders and a number of mature shrubs and trees. To the side is a part hedged and therefore protected area of highly productive kitchen garden with a fruit cage.
To the south of the house is an area of lawn suitable for a croquet lawn or grass tennis court.
The hard tennis court which is floodlit and has a practice wall is also very well screened and protected by high hedging.
To the east of the house and again well protected by mature trees is the delightful and beautifully kept cricket field. It occupies an area of about 3.7 acres and was created many years ago by the current owners who have a long held passion for the game of cricket. It has held some wonderful games of cricket over the years.
It could of course be fenced and returned to its original agricultural or equestrian use.
The Gables has a lovely rural position and is situated on the edge of the village midway between the shops, cafes and other facilities of Tisbury and the well-known and highly regarded Beckford Arms.
The surrounding countryside is delightful, forming part of the West Wiltshire area of Outstanding natural Beauty. There is a direct rail service from Tisbury to London Waterloo which takes about 1 hour, 47 minutes.
Tisbury is a very active village with a school, sports centre, small supermarket, delicatessen, florist, post office, café and several pubs. The area is also well-known for its excellent prep and senior independent and state schools including: Port Regis, Sandroyd, Clayesmore, St Mary's Shaftesbury, Gillingham School and Bryanston.
Salisbury which is about 16 miles to the east and accessible by train offers a wider range of shops, services and entertainment and further excellent schools including: South Wilts Grammar School, Bishop Wordsworth's School, The Cathedral School and Leaden Hall.
The house sits in about 5 acres with a short shared private drive to Hindon Lane.
