A last-minute decision for a midweek meal out proved to be a great choice.
Tucked away from the road through Beckington, Goose Street is quite narrow and flanked by centuries-old cottages, where we found the little gem that is The Foresters Arms.
Once a traditional village pub, the Foresters has been completely renovated with almost a wine bar feel to the bright and airy interior.
As we approached the full-length bar on a busy evening, a party of 12 was being seated for an anniversary celebration.
With a big party in we did wonder if we could get a meal but the staff said it was no problem, showed us to a table and explained the menus.
A huge blackboard displays the current menu with a choice of 12 main courses, seven more from the grill and daily specials on a printed sheet.
I was tempted by the bread board with olives and dipping oils at £5.50 to start, but in the end we both decided to go for mains, perhaps followed by a dessert.
We dithered over choices: steak and ale pie, and the pan fried chicken with a Stilton and broccoli sauce, both £11.95 with potatoes and vegetables, were attractive options, but we turned to the specials list for our final choice. I chose pork tenderloin in a creamy Stilton sauce while my partner chose sole.
With the big party being served ahead of us we had to wait a while for our dishes but they didn’t disappoint when they arrived, the presentation worthy of a fine dining restaurant.
Portions were more than adequate, with the fresh vegetables served on a separate dish.
Despite not having a starter we did not have room for dessert despite the temptation of them all being home- made.
Overall the meal was good value at £32.60, which included a large white wine and a pint of Peroni.
