My husband and I were warmly welcomed when we visited The George Inn at Sandy Lane to see how the pub is faring after its change of ownership.

It was taken over in May by Raff Weaver, who is running the pub with her son-in-law Jon Russell and her 21-year-old daughter Erin.

Mrs Weaver has Italian parents and has incorporated her love of that country’s food into the pub’s menu, including sausage casserole and tiramisu.

The décor has not changed and the pub still has a cosy English pub feel. The staff were attentive, checking everything was to our liking.

We were impressed by the starter menu, which definitely had an Italian feel to it, and went for homemade bread and dipping oils, and antipasti.

The bread and dipping oils, priced at £3.95, came with two different types of oils, rosemary and garlic, and balsamic vinegar and olive oil.

This was very tasty, as was the antipasti, priced at £5.25, which came with three different types of meat, olives, and sundried tomatoes, as well as bread.

For the main course I went for chicken cotollette – chicken breast covered in seasoned breadcrumbs, shallow fried with garlic and served with Italian-style potatoes and salad. Priced at £10.50 it was a bit like a chicken escalope. It was tender and very moreish.

The potatoes and salad were well-seasoned and a good accompaniment.

My husband tried the beef lasagne, at £9.50 and ws given a good sized portion. He said it tasted fresh, although he would have liked a little more meat.

After this we were pretty full, but still tempted by the dessert menu – including limoncello and biscotti, bakewell tart and chocolate fudge cake. We chose St Clement’s cheesecake, made with oranges and lemons on a biscuit base with an orange sauce.

The cheesecake, priced at £4.95, was deliciously tangy and not too filling.

To drink we had a large glass of Sauvignon blanc and a cola at £7.80.

Based on our experience, we thoroughly recommend trying the pub and its new menu.
