Until the leisure park complex opened in Trowbridge, the major dining chains had practically ignored the town, apart from drive-thru fast food outlets. Now we can experience all the choice you get in larger towns and cities.

They’re certainly doing good business, with lots of tables occupied on a Saturday. Some people were clearly eating before or after a visit to the cinema next door, but as many seemed to have come out just to eat.

With a hungry teenage boy’s appetite to satisfy, we spent some time trying to decide between the large range of burgers, pizza, pasta dishes, steaks and ciabatta-type sandwiches.

Finally we selected the grilled chicken pitta (£9.95) and an F&B New Yorker calzone pizza (£11.25), and sat back to admire the retro 1950s decor.

I was a bit puzzled by the quantities of black-and-white pictures of minor rock stars and total non-entities – well, apart from Elvis Presley – but the background music, a medley of 50s and 60s ballads and rock ’n’ roll numbers, was really enjoyable and not too loud to allow conversation.

We had a bit of a wait for our food to arrive, while the hungry teen wondered why people who had come in and ordered after us were being served first.

But when it was delivered it was very satisfying. His pitta bread was stuffed with a generous chicken breast and the garlic, chilli and lime sauce he chose to have poured over it was very zingy and full of flavour. It – and the fries – all vanished, right down to the lettuce and coleslaw. The half corn cob was a little waterlogged and too soft.

I enjoyed my calzone, or folded pizza, with its tomato sauce topping, especially as the sauce was not too sweet. The pizza dough was crisp on the outside and soft inside; the filling had lots of meat and not too much cheese.

Both portions were filling, so we opted to share a pudding, which was the only disappointment. The chocolate honeycomb waffle (£5.25) took a long time to arrive and, when it did, was far from warm, as promised, so the ice cream topping didn’t melt into it.

Our bill came to £34.50, including drinks. For another visit, I’ll make sure to come Sunday to Friday, when the specials menu runs, or for a weekday lunch, as those seem to offer great value.
