There are few things more reliable in life than a JD Wetherspoon pub, with the national chain’s ability to serve solid, but unspectacular, food at cheap prices almost unquestioned.

As a result, Trowbridge’s The Albany Palace in Park Road, was an obvious option when I was looking for somewhere to go to lunch with my colleagues at the end of the week.

The Lloyds No 1 bar is a favourite in the town and was unsurprisingly busy when we entered and found ourselves a table.

It took a few minutes before we could order at the bar, but the staff were pleasant and very attentive.

I went for the barbecue chicken, bacon and cheese panini with salad on the side to eat, with a standard lemonade to wash it down for a very reasonable £4.49.

The food arrived very promptly and lived up to the usual Wetherspoon standards. The chicken was really nice and tender and went nicely with the bacon and cheese, while the panini bread was well toasted.

It was by no means the best panini I have ever had, but it was tasty and did the job.

My colleagues were also happy with their meals and considering the price of the food, we really couldn’t complain.
