After Christmas shopping in Bath at the weekend, my partner, Martin, and I decided to treat ourselves to dinner at Cafe Rouge.

It is part of a chain of French-style restaurants and this one has a small frontage as you approach.

But it is a former townhouse and, once inside, we found that it was a lot bigger, with high ceilings and original features retained.

It was fairly busy, but we were quickly seated in the middle of the restaurant.

We both skipped a starter, preferring dessert, and ordered a bottle of house rose to share.

Neither of us chose a particularly French meal and the main menu isn’t large, unless you want steak, and has only two vegetarian options.

Martin had an Aberdeen Angus beef burger with Camembert cheese and smoked ham, which was served with chips.

I had a goats cheese, cherry tomato, olive and red onion tart. That had an option of chips or salad and I picked the chips.

I enjoyed the tart and, although the pastry was quite dry, the filling was delicious and the skinny chips were very tasty.

Martin said the Camembert cheese made a nice change to his burger.

For dessert, we both choose the dark chocolate fondant, which came with vanilla ice cream, dried raspberry pieces and a praline and hazelnut wafer.

I really enjoyed this dessert, although it wasn’t cheap at £5.95 and it would not have been big enough for two if we had decided to share.

The cost for the two meals, bottle of wine and two desserts came to £50.75, which I didn’t think was too expensive.

Luckily, I had a voucher for 25 per off, bringing the cost down to £38.

I would definitely go to Cafe Rouge again. Its Christmas party menu had some yummy options and the venue would be perfect for a works night out.
