A relaxing Sunday stroll around Bradford on Avon must include a trip to one of the town’s many cafes.

Having been won over by the House Tea (and a slice of cake) on a previous visit, I knew that Mr Salvat’s own blend was a good brew and ordered it again.

I was drawn to the fresh soups, eventually choosing leek and potato.

Sam had a Coke and the jacket potato with cheddar cheese and mixed herbs, although he was a little disappointed that this was the only jacket potato option.

The best aspect of Mr Salvat’s coffee room is Mr Salvat himself. Dressed in period costume, with billowing white shirt and breeches, he takes your order with a quill pen and bows before leaving you to enjoy your lunch in the cosy panelled booths next to the open fire.

I had no complaints about my generous portion of soup that came with warm, crispy French bread and the fluffy potato hit the spot with Sam.

The menu is small but very reasonably priced, with our bill coming to £10.05. Other options include pate, ploughman’s, lasagne and cakes.

With traditional music in the background, this is a perfect step back in time, but don’t get caught out by the cash-only policy.

* Opening times: Thurs-Sun 10am-5pm and bank holidays.
* Garden at rear.
* Light lunches and cakes.
