I thought the Red Lion in Lacock would be quiet after the Christmas over- indulgence but I was wrong – the pub was full of customers. It appears that the feasting continues.

We were shown to our table hidden away in a nice private corner away from all the bustle of the bar.

The flagstone floor, large open fire and delightful Georgian interior make this inn so charming. The twinkle from the candles and festive trimmings made for a cosy and warm retreat.

Our drinks did not take too long to arrive – a pot of tea and a pint of 6X. We were left wondering whether to wait for our food order to be taken or go to the bar. After a wait we went to the bar.

The lunch menu offered a selection of sharing boards, pub classics and sandwiches. Unfortunately my first choice of main, the chicken with a casserole of bacon and leek in white wine sauce, was sold out. This was disappointing as it was only 1pm. I ended up choosing the mushroom starter, which they would alter to a main.

After a wait of around 45 minutes our starters arrived. It would have been nice to have been informed of the delay but we were left wondering if our food would ever arrive as we noticed people who sat down to eat later than us were being served their food. This is a big ‘no no’ in my book.

Danny chose the garlic mushrooms in a cream white wine and tarragon sauce in puff pastry basket to start. He said it was delicious and it looked and smelled appetising – I was looking forward to having this for my main. The sauce was creamy and well delicately flavoured with tarragon. The puff pastry was crisp and airy and sat on a bed of fresh green leaves.

I chose the chicken liver parfait with a plum and apple chutney. The parfait had a lovely smooth texture with a nice buttery top but lacked a bit of flavour. The chutney was sweet and tangy and the bread was crisp.

For Danny’s main he chose the lasagne with salad and garlic and herb bread. The pasta was tender and packed with meat – a little more sauce would have been nice but Danny said the meat was tasty and he was left pleasantly full.

I had the creamy mushroom starter that they had doubled in size and added chips to make into a main. It was as tasty as it looked and the chips were crisp on the outside and fluffy on the inside and piping hot.

I was disappointed with the wait for both courses but we enjoyed our food and it was well presented.

The final bill came to around £40.
