Whether you’re after a quick bite or a more leisurely lunch, the Tollgate has something for everyone, with its lunch menu offering substantial meals as well as sandwiches and snacks.

The cosy 16th century inn is warm and welcoming, with two log fires burning merrily.

We chose sandwiches, with a bowl of chips to share, and although they seemed pricey they were substantial and delicious.

My daughter chose the smoked salmon and crayfish (£7) and I had the roast beef (£6), with meat from a local butcher who is supplied by local farmers.

My request for mayonnaise on the filling, rather than the advertised horseradish sauce, didn’t turn a hair from the friendly waitress. Nor did a request from a neighbouring table to adapt one of the advertised main meals to allow a diner to leave out an ingredient they were allergic to.

Both sandwiches came speedily, on lovely thick slices of fresh wholemeal bread, and were stuffed with filling: the roast beef had been cooked rare and was tender and the crayfish, a new taste experience for my daughter, were succulent. There was also a generous salad with a lovely tangy dressing, and the chips were chunky with floury insides. Yum yum.

Our lunch, with drinks, cost £20.75.
