WHEN you want a quick lunch on the go, where else should you head but the place which brought the fast food concept to Britain. Sadly, I've never really got to grips with the drive-thru, at McDonald's or any other chain.

In my experience, once the queues build up way past the window where you are meant to place your order, so you have to lean out of your car window and speak into a little grille, things start to go wrong, and you end up leaving with a bag full of food you hadn't ordered. Although in one instance, it was also several tasty treats we hadn't paid for!

So I prefer to park, go in, brave the queue, place my order with a real human being and then walk out.

Now my children have all gone past the Happy Meal and birthday party stage, we no longer have to endure the eat-in option, with its attendant noise, mess and pervading smell of fries.

This might sound as if I hate Macdonalds. Far from it - the original Big Mac is still one of my favourite foodie treats. And now you can order the meal option with coffee (or even a flavoured latte if I'm really feeling in need of a pick-me-up) it's even better.

On this visit that's what I went for, while David wanted the traditional Big Mac meal with cola. He passed on dessert, but I'd had a bad week at work and indulged myself with a Galaxy Caramel McFlurry. If you're going to spoil yourself, do it properly.

Our speedy lunch, eaten while transferring from one sporting event to another, cost just £10.67 for two.
