HAVING walked past Bills on a number of occasions, I decided to pop into the quirky and rather cosy restaurant one afternoon with some friends for a bite to eat.

While it may not look like much from the outside, Bills is packed with character on the inside with interesting touches, such as chandeliers, candles and mirrors, giving it a strangely homely feel.

The menu is just as fascinating, with starters including everything from chicken in a jar (£5.95) and crispy lemon squid (£5.95) to crab, chilli and pawn cakes and grilled halloumi with quinoa.

Not wanting to spoil our main, we decided to get some potato and rosemary bread with olive oil and balsamic to share (£4.50), which came out warm and was much tastier than it sounds on paper.

For mains there were plenty of dishes to choose from, with chicken caesar (£9.95), pan-fried sea bass (£12.95), beer-battered cod (£11.95) and fish pie (£12.95) among the options available.

I ultimately decided on Bill’s hamburger (£9.95) after being recommended it by a friend, adding Monterey jack cheese and streaky bacon for an additional £2.70.

It was a choice I didn’t regret, as the burger was perfectly cooked – slightly pink in the middle – and was perfectly complemented by the Monterey jack cheese and streaky bacon, while the sweet potato fries I had on the side were also excellent.

It may not be the cheapest place in Bath to eat and drink – Bill’s cider cost a pricey £4.50 – but the quality more than makes up for the price. It is certainly well worth the trip.
