THE Thai Barn in Bradford on Avon describes its food as “royal Thai cuisine” and that is certainly what my friend and I found.
Having only recently moved just several doors down from its previous site, we had decided to find out what the new-look Thai Barn in St Margaret’s Street has to offer.
The ground floor features a large fireplace, wooden beams and stone walls that are typical of the beautiful architecture you come to expect from a town like Bradford on Avon.
The restaurant is spread across three rooms over two floors, each with a different ambience to suit certain themes, such as the garden room, where we were taken, that was fresh, white and clean with bamboo and flowers.
While choosing our order we devoured some rice crackers, only to find that they were replaced just as quickly as we had eaten them – that's my idea of good service.
For starters, I opted for Tod Man Plaa, or Thai fishcakes with sweet chilli sauce, for £7.75.
The four fishcakes were delicious and full of flavour. The sauce, as always for me, is the highlight and it was all neatly arranged with a neatly-prepared artistic side-salad that almost looked too good to eat.
It was a majestic start for the Thai Barn.
My friend opted for Gai Haw Bai Toey, or deep fried marinated chicken thigh wrapped in pandanus leaves and served with sweet soya sauce for £7.25.
Luckily she knew not to try the leaves, unlike myself one occasion when I chewed them for several minutes like a grazing cow.
For mains, I chose panang gai, or chicken in a rich red curry sauce with sweet basil leaves, red peppers and kaffir lime leaves for £8.95. I also ordered plain noodles – which surprisingly wasn’t on the menu but provided on request. Meanwhile my friend chose Gang Karee Gai, a delicious looking chicken cooked in a mild yellow curry sauce with sweet potato and red peppers for £8.25 The portions were large but too delicious to waste The staff were delightful and attentive.
As I walked out of the restaurant I can safely say that it was a banquet fit for royalty and I will be going there again.
