Tel: 01793 861575 OPENING HOURS: Tuesday to Saturday, 11.30am to 3pm and 6pm to 11pm, with food served from noon until 2pm and from 7pm until 9pm. Sundays noon until 5pm with food served from noon until 2pm.

WHAT DO THEY SERVE?: Proprietors Richard and Shelley Terry offer a regularly-changed roster of real ales. The current ones are White Horse Giant at £2.70 a pint and Breakspears Bitter at £2.60. Lager starts at £2.90 a pint. The extensive wine list includes four reds, three whites and a rose available by the glass, and prices range from £3.25 to £5, depending on the wine and measure chosen. Spirits start at £1.80 for a measure of a standard spirit and rise to £6 for a measure of 1985 Hine cognac. Other spirits include a selection of malt whiskies.

WHO DRINKS THERE?: Mr Terry said: “We have a real mixture of people here, from the local stonemason to city boys who live locally and commute to London. We try to keep a village pub atmosphere while at the same time offering food ranging from traditional meals to restaurant dishes.”

FOOD AVAILABLE?: The food is highly regarded, and prepared with local ingredients. Starters include soup at £4.95, steamed asparagus at £6.50 and locally shot breast of pigeon at £5.25. Main courses include home made venison meatballs at £10.95, pan fried fillet of sea bass at £13.95 and an 8oz steak with chips for £14.95. Desserts cost £5.75 and include such choices as iced hazelnut parfait.

SPECIAL EVENTS?: There are no conventional special events, but in a sense the whole village is a special event as it is a historic National Trust site. The pub was the village smithy until 1949.

CHILD POLICY: Well-behaved, supervised children are welcome.

DISABLED ACCESS: The pub Grade II listed and customers who think they may have difficulties are advised to call in advance so any necessary arrangements can be made.

PARKING: There is a small car park.
