It had been a hard morning’s shopping, and the thought of a spot of lunch before returning home was a welcome one.
We’ve noticed plenty of cars parked at The Plough as we’ve driven past, so decided to call into see what was on offer. A friendly welcome was the first thing, as we stepped into the small front bar area, followed by an invitation to eat at the restaurant.
The decor of the L-shaped room was perhaps a bit dated, but chalkboards of specials showed the menu had clearly moved on, with fresh fish featuring as well as game.
We took a little while to choose because, although the menu was not dauntingly large, it offered ample choice for meat eaters although not so much for vegetarians. Prices were quite keen, with starters around £4 to £5, mains from £8 to £12 and puddings at £4.95.
I started with whitebait (£4.95), a favourite, while Alison chose sweet potato and sweetcorn soup (£4.50).
The fish was delicious, a lovely pile of superbly fresh morsels presented in crunchy batter, although without the usual brown bread and butter. The soup, which came so hot its flavour took time to appreciate, was equally good, although it seemed to have an olive oil garnish.
For main I chose the chicken breast stuffed with apricot (£9.50), which came in a generous portion rather inelegantly presented, as it appeared to be smothered with unnecessary gravy.
The flavour was unusually different and delicious, and the gravy turned out to be very useful for dipping the ample serving of chips.
Alison’s lamb, garlic and winter vegetable hotpot (£8.95) was bursting with vegetables and flavour, albeit with a rather thinner gravy than she was expecting.
The mashed potato was overkill, and sadly the large portions meant neither of us could make much headway with the vegetables, but those we did sample were tasty.
We were both too full to contemplate pudding, which was just as well as I caught sight of a monster ice cream arriving at a nearby table.
Standing as it does just outside town, you might be more likely to drive by The Plough than to drop in. You could be missing a trick, as it offers more than the usual pub grub.
Good value for money, too – our bill, with drinks, came to £33.10.
