HAVING dined at The Bolingbroke Arms on numerous occasions in the evening, it seemed only right to try out their fare on a Sunday lunchtime.
Traditionalists will be pleased to hear that there is a selection of roasts on offer including beef, pork and chicken (all £9.95). For those who can’t decide which they would prefer there is a roast platter which combines beef and pork, served with extra Yorkshire pudding (£12.95). There is a child’s version (£5.95) but no vegetarian option.
As well as Sunday roasts there is also an extensive menu with choices from smoked haddock and mozzarella fishcakes with mashed potato (£8.95) to cheese, onion and mushroom omelette (£7.50).
After much umming and ahhhing we settled on the beef and pork platter, braised lamb fillet in garlic and rosemary gravy (£11.50), braised minted lamb shank (£10.50) and the day’s special, ham hock in a cheese and parsley sauce (£7.95).
The meals were at the table swiftly and all looked delicious. However, we could have done with a few more vegetables. There was only one small dish of red cabbage, peas, broccoli and carrots to share between four of us.
The ham hock was definitely the best value for money and was a very filling meal. The roast pork was described as being very nice as was the Yorkshire pudding (which seemed to be an extra big one, rather than a numerical extra one we expected from the menu).
Having been asked if we would like desserts and told by our waiter he’d be back in five minutes to take our order - homemade apple and raspberry crumble, homemade Baileys cheesecake, steamed jam sponge pudding and Belgian cahocolate fudge cake (all £5.95), it was disappointing to wait quite a long time for anyone to appear at the table again. In the end I gave up and went to order at the bar where they were very apologetic and even helped me carry the drinks I ordered to the table.
Overall our bill, including two rounds of drinks, came to £81.90.
