Terry’s Takeaway, Swindon

IT WASN’T high on my priority list when deciding to move but having what one of my colleagues once called “the number one takeaway in Swindon” virtually on the doorstep was a definite plus.

So instead of having to wait for delivery we could order and pick up our food 15 minutes later - great when you don’t want to cook or wait long for your food.

We started with hot and sour soup (£2.30) and the fingerbox special (£7.50) which had a mix of spare ribs, crispy seaweed, prawn toast, mini spring rolls and satay chicken skewers. It was good value and a nice mix but the crispy seaweed was much too sweet for my taste.

We followed with chicken chow mein (£3.80), beef with green peppers in black bean sauce (£4.50), Thai noodles (£4.80) and boiled rice (£2) which were all standard fare and, stars of the show, sweet and sour fish Hong Kong style (£4.80) and king prawns with garlic, salt and chilli peppers (£4.80). There was a light touch with the batters and they were full of flavour.

There were free prawn crackers as the order was over £12 and a free bottle of wine as it was over £20, which is a nice bonus if you like Lambrini.

Terry’s has a huge menu ranging from fish and chips and burgers to regional Chinese and Thai dishes, so there should be something to satisfy all tastes.

And along with set dinners there are all in one containers which offer things like chicken chop suey, sweet and sour pork and egg fried rice for £6.50.

Terry’s still has the “No 1 takeaway in Swindon” claim - made in 2007 - proudly printed on its menu. Whether it still holds true, I’m not sure - there are still a few takeaways I haven’t sampled! - but it’s certainly a good one to have within walking distance.

Terry’s Takeaway, 30 Eastcott Road, Old Town SN1 3LR 01793 536788. Free delivery within four miles (minimum order £10). Monday to Saturday noon to 2pm and 5pm to 11pm; Sunday and bank holidays 5pm to 11pm.
