O’Neills, Swindon

My younger years often involved a good old drinking session at the bottom of town, with O'Neills more often than not the preferred destination.

Never before had I eaten at the Irish-themed drinking establishment, though, and so it was with a good degree of trepidation I headed down for a spot of lunch with two workmates.

I need not have worried. With a diverse range of food on offer, from light bites to more hearty meals, and all at good prices, it proved the perfect spot for a quick meal to be squeezed in during our lunch hour.

The place was never going to be your poshest place in town but with good food and drink and a pleasant atmosphere, there is nothing really to find fault with.

From your lunchtime drinkers, to business lunches to having a quick bite to eat, O'Neills caters for all - and a pint of Guinness always seems to taste that little bit better surrounded by shamrocks.

After a good deal of thought, with an extensive range of food on offer, I went for the steak and ale pie and chips, a pub classic, and I wasn't disappointed.

The pastry was the perfect, crispy appetiser to the main ingredient with the steak succulent and oozing in ale-soaked gravy.

The chips were nice and chunky, while the meal also came with peas.

As for the others, Big Tone had a burger and chips which he described as "spot on" while Owen, from the older generation, enjoyed a well-cooked fish and chips.

With two pints of Guinness and a coke also enjoyed between us, a final price of £21.07 seemed more than reasonable.

For those in less of a rush, giant games are also on offer - what could be better than an afternoon playing giant Jenga?
