McFly are taking a stroll down memory lane as they tour the UK to promote their greatest hits album.

They will be singing songs from Memory Lane: The Best of McFly when they pop into Swindon’s Oasis on Friday.

The band are named after Marty McFly from favourite feature film, Back To The Future, and the line-up includesTom Fletcher, Danny Jones, Dougie Pynter and Harry Judd.

Tom and Danny auditioned for the band Busted. Tom was taken on to write songs for them alongside songwriter James Bourne, and Danny lost out to Charlie Simpson. The musicians finally met when they applied to join the new boy band called V. They hit it off and began collaborating on their own band, McFly, recruiting Harry and Dougie along the way.

Their first single was Five Colours In Her Hair and it shot straight to number one in the UK chart in 2004. The boys then released their first album, Room On The Third Floor, which earned them a Guinness Book of World Records entry as the youngest band to have a debut album enter the charts in the top slot, depriving The Bealtes of that distinction.

Hit after hit followed including Comic Relief single, All About You, and albums Wonderland and Radio Active.

Somewhere in their recording and touring schedule Harry managed to win the nineth series of Striclty Come Dancing and Dougie scooped the king of the jungle title in I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out of Here.

Always up for a lark the boys starred in the Top Gear Comic Relief show called Top Gear of the Pops when they had to come up with a song from scratch including the words sofa, Hyundai and administration.

The guys appeared in a Dr Who episode and also in the teen film Just My Luck with Lindsay Lohan. The soundtrack features a number of their songs.

Harry was asked to carry the Olympic torch as part of the Olympic Torch Relay Run and the band played at the outdoor Hyde Park show as part of the London Olympic celebrations last year.

The band’s sing-along track, Star Girl, was played by Chris Moyles every Friday on the BBC Radio One Breakfast show for two years on what he dubbed McFly day. On the presenter’s last day the boys created a video called Star Boy as a tribute to Chris.

McFly day in Swindon is  on Friday, April 19, when the pop punk band head for the Oasis Leisure Centre. Tickets are £27.50 each plus £2.50 booking fee, from 01793 445401. - Flicky Harrison
