A UNIQUE orchestra assembled by Swindon musician Shaun Buswell will be playing in Devizes.

Organisers are delighted to have secured the London Underground Orchestra to play at St Mary’s Church, Devizes, and say it is coup for the town.

The orchestra was assembled in 2012 by Shaun, a regular traveller on the tube. He noticed that every day he would see at least one passenger carrying a musical instrument case on the train.

He set himself a challenge to create an ad hoc orchestra made up entirely from casual meetings with musicians on the Underground which would perform at a major London venue within 12 months, which he achieved.

To great acclaim the orchestra of 70 musicians played a programme of contemporary and classical music at the Shepherd’s Bush Empire.

The orchestra has since played several times in London, including a performance on the London Eye for BBC TV.

The performance at St Mary’s Church, in New Park Street, on March 1 at 8pm is the opening concert in a programme of events to promote a project to convert the church into a modern, 250-seat venue for the arts.

Tickets for the London Underground Orchestra concert are £10 or £25 for a family ticket for two adults and two children. They are available from Devizes Books or online at www.WeGotTickets.com.
