Saturday, May 23 Tickets: £10 01793 614837 Pete Brown has finally thrown off his water wings and dived into the music business on his own account.
Son of the famous Cockney rock ‘n’ roller Joe Brown, Pete has been the engine driver of the family, producing albums for his father and sister Sam, including her worldwide hit Stop, along with working for artists such as Dave Gilmour, Sade, Dennis Locorriere and Edwin Starr.
The most famous star to call upon his soundman skills was George Harrison - and it came as a total surprise to Pete.
“I was in the pub with my dad. It was about 10.30pm at night and his phone went off. It was George. He said: Is your Pete with you? Put him on,” said Pete.
The Beatles’ engineer had let him down and he was in the recording studio so he wanted Pete to help him out “I went there and then, got in a cab, recorded three songs and drank plenty of coffee. It was a great night and I can say I have worked with a Beatle. He was very receptive to my ideas.”
Pete is currently touring the UK to promote his own debut album called Not Before TIme, and he stops off in Swindon this week.
The album is a mix of songs that Pete has written and a few covers that he likes.
“Sam produced it with me. It is an exorcism and includes a song I wrote when I was 19 called The Smell Of You,” he said.
The brother and sister are very close and work together regularly.
“I tour with my dad’s band and worked with Sam until she moved to Jools Holland’s entourage.”
The musician admits that he and Sam didn’t always get along.
“When we were kids we couldn’t stand the sight of each other. We both left home and shared a flat and now have a good relationship,” said Pete.
Pete has also worked with Deep Purple but is now performing with his band The Volunteers before heading off to build a recording studio for his father.
